Have you sailed on a Disney Cruise? One of our favorite things about sailing aboard a Disney ship is you and your family get to experience all the magic of a Disney park - but without the crowds or lines! Also a little fun fact about Disney Cruise line is it has up to four captains aboard their vessels; the ship’s captain, Captain Mickey, Captain Hook and Captain Jack Sparrow. But move over boys and make room for a new captain – Captain Minnie Mouse! Captain Minnie is part of an industry-wide effort to teach STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) skills during maritime-themed activities and will be sailing aboard Disney Cruise Ships in order to inspire girls and young women to set their sights on maritime leadership roles starting this month. Some of Captain Minnie’s duties will be making rounds on all ships across the Disney fleet and appearing in Disney’s new onboard youth programs later this year. These new programs will be available to both girls and boys.
According to the president of Disney Cruise Line, Jeff Vahle - "Our Disney characters have a unique ability to inspire and connect with children, and we know Captain Minnie will encourage young girls around the world to consider a career in the maritime industry," Disney is also working to inspire and encourage girls around the world through scholarships at the LJM Maritime Academy in the Bahamas. Captain Minnie will do school visits in Disney Cruise Line's homeports and ports of call. Captain Minnie, along with a female Disney Cruise Line officer or crew member will visit local children to raise awareness about career choices for women aboard cruise ships. Girls not only get to meet Captain Minnie they can even dress the part of ships captain with a makeover at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique! Disney Cruise Line to you and to Captain Minnie we say – Aye!
